Evansville Mater Dei, along with Reitz, Jasper, and Gibson Southern all find themselves in the top 10 of their respective classes in Tuesday's weekly Associated Press state-wide football poll.
Friday night's Mater Dei versus Reitz game was an instant classic that fans on both sides will remember for a long time. Unfortunately, someone had to lose, and this time around that someone was the Panthers 29-28, causing a ripple effect that has shown itself in this week's Associated Press state rankings.
As is customary for the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), the pairings for the upcoming Sectional round of the state tournament were announced on Sunday, one week before the regular season wraps up. The pairings announced show some teams will face familiar foes to open the tournament, while others will match up against teams they have not yet seen.
The votes have been cast, and once again no one was able to overcome the top dogs (or Panthers, Wildcats, or Titans in this case) for the number one spots in Classes 2, 3, and 4A.
The weekly Associated Press rankings for Indiana High School Football were released on Tuesday, and once again, three teams from the Tri-State area find themselves sitting pretty on top of their respective classes.
After a nail-biting victory over the Harrison Warriors, the Mater Dei Wildcats sit atop the Associated Press Class 2A poll for the fourth week in a row. Meanwhile, thanks to their 35-30 win over the Castle Knights, Reitz finds themselves sitting on top in Class 4A. But they're not the only teams in the area getting props.
